Interview: Les cinq arbres sacrés de Kiso (WOMCO)

I’m honored to be featured in an in-depth interview with WOMCO (World Online Music Competitions) about my ensemble work Les cinq arbres sacrés de Kiso, inspired by the sacred forests of Japan and awarded the Platinum Prize & Excellent Creativity Special Award at the 2025 Claude Debussy International Music Competition.

  • In the interview, I reflect on how encounters with ancient trees, ritual landscapes and silence shaped the musical language of the piece — from rhythm and harmony to long-form dramaturgy. I also speak about my broader compositional approach, the role of narrative in contemporary music, and the challenges and opportunities for composers today.

The sacred trees of Kiso became for me a powerful metaphor for rootedness, resilience and transformation — themes that continue to inform much of my recent orchestral and ensemble writing.

Two compositions on Spanish National Radio 03/01/2026

RTVE Radio 3 is Spain’s leading public platform for alternative, independent, and experimental culture. Founded in 1979, it has played a pivotal role in shaping Spain’s contemporary cultural landscape, becoming a symbol of artistic freedom and openness during and after the country’s democratic transition.

  • Renowned for its commitment to creativity over commercial logic, Radio 3 has been instrumental in discovering and supporting new voices across a wide spectrum of music and sound practices—from experimental rock and electronic music to jazz, folk, ambient, hip-hop, and avant-garde forms. Its programming also embraces literature, cinema, visual arts, philosophy, and sound art, earning the station strong intellectual and artistic prestige.

Within this context, two of my most personal and valued compositions (they are the first two compositions of the program) were featured on the Radio 3 program Música para aeropuertos: Cardiomyopathie for electrocardiogramme and guitar (2022), and Méandres for symphony orchestra and electronics (2005–2008). Their broadcast situates these works within a space dedicated to introspective listening, sonic experimentation, and the exploration of inner and outer landscapes.

With national coverage and international reach through streaming and archives, Radio 3 functions less as a mass-market broadcaster and more as a cultural reference point—a laboratory for sound and ideas, and a bridge between experimental creation and the public. For many artists, being featured on Radio 3 represents a mark of credibility and artistic seriousness, reflecting cultural impact rather than commercial ambition.
